The apartment complex known as Robert Taylor Homes C-2 is located at 4200 S Prairie Ave, Chicago, IL 60653. It was a part of the larger Robert Taylor Homes public housing project, which was one of the largest public housing developments in the United States.

Robert Taylor Homes C-2 comprised a cluster of high-rise apartment buildings, predominantly made up of public housing units. These buildings were constructed in the mid-1960s and named after Robert Rochon Taylor, the first African American chairman of the Chicago Housing Authority. The complex was managed by the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) and provided subsidized housing to low-income residents.

At its peak, the Robert Taylor Homes project consisted of 28 high-rise buildings, providing housing for approximately 27,000 residents. However, due to a combination of factors including deteriorating living conditions, crime rates, and social issues, the Robert Taylor Homes became notorious for concentrated poverty, violence, and drug-related problems.

Over time, the conditions in the Robert Taylor Homes deteriorated significantly, and the complex became one of the most disadvantaged areas in Chicago. The CHA began demolishing the Robert Taylor Homes in the late 1990s as part of a plan to deconcentrate poverty and revitalize the neighborhood. By 2007, all of the original buildings were demolished.

Today, the site where Robert Taylor Homes C-2 once stood is now vacant. The area has undergone significant redevelopment efforts, including the creation of mixed-income housing and other community development projects aimed at revitalizing the neighborhood.

Smart Ways to Find an Affordable Apartment

Search for Apartments with Flexible Lease Terms

If you're unsure how long you'll need an apartment, look for rentals that offer flexible lease terms. Month-to-month leases or short-term leases can provide flexibility without locking you into a long commitment. While these leases may come with slightly higher rents, they offer the freedom to move when needed without penalty.

Affordable Housing Tip

Capitalise on Tax Incentives

Look into potential tax incentives for buying or renting a home. Some states offer tax credits for first-time homebuyers, while others may have deductions available for renters. These incentives can reduce overall housing costs.
